Motorcycling safely - a motorcycling riding program
Riding in traffic
- Changing
lanes using the rear view mirrors, flickers (turn indicators) and a
quick glimpse over your shoulder
- Choosing
a line through the traffic. Choosing
the line that makes the rider the most visible to other road users. (see
the page called 'Riding in Traffic ' for more)
- Intersections.
Approaching intersections cautiously and with room to take avoiding
action or to make a successful emergency stop. The golden rule applies
i.e. Slow in, Fast Out
- Avoiding
riding in a vehicle's blind spot.
- Safe
lane splitting. On many bikes the wing mirrors are the widest point in
the front of the bike.
- Monitoring
the vehicles 'intent' by watching their front tyres. They will tell you
what the driver intends to do moments before it actually happens.
- Monitoring
the vehicles 'intent' by watching the driver's head. They will tell you
what the driver intends to do moments before it actually happens.
- Monitoring
the vehicles 'intent' by monitoring their deceleration. Drivers take
their foot off their accelerator before they do something unexpected -
like turn in front of you.
- Monitoring
the vehicles 'intent' by monitoring what is going on inside the car.
Is the driver on the cell phone, are they distracted by badly behaved
children, are they fiddling with the radio etc. Distracted drivers like
this are likely to do something stupid and unexpected.
-
Watch for gaps in the slow moving traffic. A driver will always move
into an open gap. Make sure you do not move into the drivers path as
they change direction and move into the gap.
- Fast
acceleration from a robot but still checking for vehicles jumping the
red light who will cross your intended path.
